Papertrade found a way to make losing money feel productive. You get a receipt.
Launched Oct 10 on HyperEVM. Up to 1,000x on BTC and ETH. No order book. Every trade is against one USDC pool that starts at zero and fills from trader losses.
Lose $1, mint 100 $PAPER (while the pool is under $2M). Stake PAPER, collect 1% of realized PnL plus whatever the pool holds above a $5M cap.
Day one: traders down ~$18M, stakers paid ~$12.6M. The yield is the liquidation feed.
Then the price feed. Papertrade fills at Hyperliquid's best bid/offer midpoint. Per The Block, one wallet nudged ETH there about 0.12% and netted ~$1.28M. The team says that was "not an oversight in the mechanism design" and is tightening open interest caps. Reassuring, in its way.
Token Autopsy: value really does reach $PAPER. It's just sourced from whoever minted PAPER most recently. Stakers win as long as fresh losers keep arriving. The losers get paid in a token whose yield is their next loss.
Is "loss-to-earn" a new primitive, or a casino that finally put the house edge on-chain?
